Daylight Saving - Mothering Sunday - A timely reminder.

In addition to being Mothering Sunday, here in the United Kingdom (U.K), Sunday 26th March, marks the start of British Summer Time (B.S.T), when the clocks are turned forward by one hour, giving us that all important extra hour of daylight in the evenings.

The official time for turning the clocks forward will fall in the early hours of Sunday morning. For ease of reference this is usually set at 01:00:00 hours. In effect, this is where we "Lose an hours sleep!" as 1 am becomes 2 am.

Usually, and I'm sure many of you are the same, we change our clocks just before we go to bed. I say 'usually' because there have been occasions over the years, where we've forgotten to change one of the clocks, more often than not the alarm clock, only to realise the mistake when half way to work, wondering why the roads are quieter than normal!

Still, the extra hour of daylight in the evening soon makes up for it.

What will you do with your extra hour of daylight?

Interestingly, Mothering Sunday does not always coincide with B.S.T. in the U.K. Mothering Sunday  falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday. As we all know, Easter celebrations are a moveable feast, falling on or around the first full moon after the Spring equinox. So our Mothering Sunday can fall anytime between late March and early April.

Other countries, celebrate Mother's Day, on different dates throughout the year. In the USA and Australia, for example, it is celebrated on Sunday 14th May, whilst in Hungary, Portugal and Spain celebrations are held on the 7th of May.

The origins of both Easter (Ostara) and Mothering Sunday are interesting and open to both debate and interpretation, but more about that, closer to the time.

Have a wonderful day!

Love and light,

Willow
